What Does This Feature Do?
The “Hook into Web Browser” option is used when a video is harder to download through yt-dlp’s own methods. This option allows ROSI/YT-DLP to use the cookies from your web browser to assist in downloading.
Cookies help ROSI access videos that require authentication or have additional protections. Your existing browser session helps bypass these restrictions.
Browser Support by Platform
Windows Users
On Windows, browser choices are limited to Firefox only due to a Chromium Windows update that restricts cookie access.
MacOS and Linux Users
Users on MacOS or Linux have access to Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc.) along with Firefox.
When Should I Use This?
Consider using the “Hook into Web Browser” option when:
- A download fails with authentication errors
- You need to download age-restricted content
- The video requires you to be logged in
- You’re getting “video unavailable” errors for content you can view in your browser
